What is a Cost Basis?

When looking at stocks, for example, you’ll see its cost basis. Cost basis is the original value of an asset, and usually the purchase price. It can be adjusted for stock splits, dividends, and return of capital distributions. This value is used to determine the capital gain/loss, which is equal to the difference between the asset’s cost basis and the current market value.
