What is an Index Fund?

An index fund is a type of mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the returns of a market index. For example, the S&P 500 is an index that some index funds try to track the returns of. If you invest in an “index fund” that tracks the S&P 500, you will be able to have similar returns as that index.
